Hera DayIn honor of our patron goddess Hera, Alpha Chi Omega gives personal service for the happiness and well-being of others on a special day called Hera Day on March 1st.
In March 2021, we raised over $2400 in donations to make 30 Build-A-Bear Workshop Teddy Bears for the children staying at SafeHaven of Tarrant County Women's Shelter. We used the remainder of the funds to make 50 shower caddies that included shower gel, deodorant, and shampoo just to name a few. We also donated 30 boxes of Crayolas, and 50 pairs of flip flops! This was a wonderful year for us, we went well beyond our goal. We made each child a custom teddy bear with an outfit each at Build-A-Bear Workshop at The Parks at Arlington Mall and included a box of crayons in each house so they could color the outside of the box. In 2020, we raised enough for 35 bears and in 2019, 37 bears with additional funds for supplies. A bonus year was 2018 when we were able to deliver a $1000 check from an Alpha Chi Omega Founders Day challenge where Delta Eta Delta won!! The past 7 years has been a wonderful opportunity to get our own children involved in making the bears to teach them about domestic violence and how some children have to leave everything they have behind to escape in the middle of the night to seek help from a shelter. The true reward for our members was when we got to hand deliver the teddy bears to each child to see the look of pure joy and appreciation on their faces, and getting lots of hugs! This was such a wonderful event that we have decided to make this an annual tradition for our alumnae chapter. We had such an amazing response in previous years that we have decided to make this Teddy Bear Drive an annual Hera Day fundraiser and service project. Thank you to all those that donated! We are currently requesting donations for the 2022 Hera Day of service event. We look forward to having record breaking year, help us achieve this goal and not let any child go without a bear. A $30 donation will provide one child with a custom made teddy bear with an outfit, a carrying case house to color, a box of crayons. Any additional money we raise after the teddy bear purchase will be used to purchase additional items on SafeHaven's wish list! SafeHaven Toy DriveEvery holiday season we dig deep into our pockets to help those women and children who have been victims of Domestic Violence to help them have a better Christmas. Every December we have our Annual Holiday Party and Toy Drive to collect toys and gifts to benefit SafeHaven of Tarrant County's Annual Santa's Sack. This year's event will be in December additionally we will gather on a later date to make our delivery at the Lincoln Square drop location. Check out our events page on Facebook for more details.
Please bring NEW, unwrapped gifts for SafeHaven. They are looking for: toys (for all ages), games, puzzles, purses, scarves, gift cards, electronics, and any other new items you would like to see under your own tree. The kids staying at the shelters also give their mom a gift, so please donate gifts for women too! |
